Love & Laughter

This year for Valentine’s day, I tried something new. I offered assemblage greeting cards. They are over-sized and the front is crowded with things like rhinestones, resin flowers, flowers made of fabric, collage, and stickers.

I got romantic card requests for the flowers, ribbons, and bows, but I got a funny request too. One gentleman asked if I could make him a Valentine’s Day card for his partner that had references to farts. He wanted me to know that his partner thought little monkeys were cute too.

Of course, I said, no problem.

How do I make a Valentine’s Day card with farts? Do I use cotton balls? Will cotton balls really convey a fart? Did I own any magazines that featured verbiage about passing gas? These are the thoughts of an artist.

Then I found a recycled encyclopedia. I looked up the word gas, the word gas led me to stars.

I replaced the word stars with the word farts. Massive Farts. Small Farts. The illustrations of nebulous forms in space were pink, as if they were made for this Valentine’s Day card. It was perfect.

I found candy that was the shape of the poo emoji, and it was rainbow colored. Thinking of candy and cards made me think of Valentine’s Day cards from elementary school, the kind that had lollipops attached.

So, I did it. I just put it all together:
the farts,
the monkeys,
the candy,
the romance.

The next time his partner saw me in public, she gave me a hug. Humor and romance tied together worked for them.

I don’t really know why I’m telling you this story in July, because it’s not close to Valentine’s day, and we’ll forget it by the time Valentine’s day comes around again.

I guess subconsciously I just wanted to share something funny with you. Some news that only has to do with love and laughter.
